Road Improvement Program
The following roads are scheduled for repair in the 2018 Shorewood Road Improvement Program:
River Road and Route 52 Intersection
This Village of Shorewood led project received federal funding administered by IDOT at an 80/20 split. The project was awarded to D Construction for $3,082,206.02 including the cost of the bridge which is $770,144.38 of the total project cost. The Village’s portion of the entire project is approx. $616,000.
The proposed improvements include widening and resurfacing US 52 to two through lanes and a left-turn lane in each direction. River Road will be widened and resurfaced to include a single through lane, a right-turn lane, and a left-turn lane in each direction. The existing traffic signal at the intersection will be revised to accommodate the proposed roadway improvement. The Hammel Creek channel along the north side of US 52 will be regraded within the existing right-of-way to accommodate the roadway widening. The bridge was required to address Pedestrian accommodations over the Hammel Creek spillway. The pedestrian access was a requirement to assist in receiving federal funding for this project. A multi-use path is proposed to be constructed between the pond and US 52 west of the intersection to connect to the existing Village path to the northwest. Sidewalks will be reconstructed where necessary to American with Disabilities Act criteria. Glen Mor Drive is proposed to be converted to right-in/right-out only access at River Road to prevent backups into the intersection of US 52 and River Road.
The project is currently still on track for substantial competition by the end of November. There will still be restoration as well as work on lighting and traffic signals taking place throughout the winter. We will continue to provide weekly updates as this project continues.
The pavement is too wet to put down striping today (12/20), but the contractor will move forward with cleaning the pavement and removing the old striping today (and put down temporary tape). They will try thermoplastic tomorrow (12/21).
As of now, the contractor is scheduled to perform pavement marking/striping Thursday (12/20). During this operation there will be extra construction equipment in the work zone, temporary lane closures, and flaggers directing/stopping traffic. Motorists should anticipate extra delays/congestion.
Please be aware, this work is very weather sensitive, so rain or moisture on the pavement will cause a cancellation.
On Friday (12/7) the contractor will be on-site to "winterize" the pavement. This work will consist of grinding and placing HMA (hot mix asphalt) patches at various locations. Motorists should expect additional construction equipment/traffic, flaggers, and temporary traffic stoppages.
The final surface course paving is scheduled Monday (11/19) and Tuesday (11/20) with permanent pavement marking to follow soon after (Weather Pending). During paving operations there will be extra construction equipment in the work zone, temporary lane closures, and flaggers directing/stopping traffic. Motorists should anticipate extra delays/congestion. Pavement marking should only involve localized lane closures.
The contractor is scheduled to pour Phase II curb and gutter for Route 52 and River Road. Weather permitting, this work will take place on Thursday (11/1). There may be extra construction traffic, temporary lane closures, and flaggers directing traffic. Extra delays and congestion is anticipated.
Work on the entrance replacements for CVS, Walgreens, and Hammel Creek Commons has begun. The contractor will replace half of the entrances at a time. The north half of the entrance to CVS and Walgreens are being worked on this week, once the concrete is cured, work will begin on the south side of the CVS and Walgreens entrances. The right-in access off of Route 52 to Hammel Creek Commons has been removed and the entrances is expected to be restored by Saturday (10/6) afternoon. The right-out from the Hammel Creek Commons to Route 52 will be scheduled to be replaced next week.
The engineers and contractors have let me know that the project appears to be on schedule and should be substantially complete by the end of November.
The contractor is scheduled to begin driving piles into the ground to support the new pedestrian bridge on Monday (8/13) at the intersection of Rt 52 and River Rd. Weather depending, the process is expected to last 3-4 days. This work will not have any additional impact on traffic although the process can be noisy and there may be minor ground vibrations.
Weather Depending, new traffic control patterns will be set up for stage 2 of the project beginning Monday (7/2) or Tuesday (7/3). Route 52 traffic will be shifted to the south and River Road traffic will be shifted to the west. Extra construction equipment and workers will be present. Extra congestion and delays should be anticipated.
Asphalt work will be taking place beginning Monday (6/18) or Tuesday (6/19). There will be extra construction traffic, temporary lane closures, and flaggers directing traffic. Extra delays and congestion is anticipated.
The concrete pour scheduled for today at the intersection of River Road and Rt 52 has been rescheduled for Monday (6/11) due to weather. There will be extra construction traffic, temporary lane closures, and flaggers directing traffic. Extra delays and congestion is anticipated.
Weather permitting, the contractor is scheduled to pour the curb and gutter on Friday (6/8). There will be extra construction traffic, temporary lane closures, and flaggers directing traffic. Extra delays and congestion is anticipated.
Beginning Monday (6/11), Glen Mor Drive at River Road will be closed to motorists. Weather depending, the intersection is expected to re-open by the end of the week (6/15). Please note: Upon its re-opening this intersection will be a right in/right out configuration. No left turns will be permitted onto or from River Road.
Weather conditions have prevented traffic control changes detailed below from taking place today (4/19). Work has been rescheduled for Friday morning (4/20)
Weather permitting, the next phase of construction for the intersection of Route 52 and River Road will take place Wednesday afternoon (4/18) or Thursday (4/19)
During this time, traffic patterns will be shifted. All lanes of traffic will be shifted to the North on Route 52 and to the East on River Road. There will be reduced speed limits in the construction zone and workers/construction vehicles will be present.
