Crime Prevention

Across the nation crime is dropping. We've seen prevention's dramatic success in tough neighborhoods and in entire cities. Although we have made great strides in prevention, we have not eliminated crime from our communities.

When we see the media report on other communities, we see schools plagued by violence, residents afraid to walk their neighborhood's streets, and children that are still confronted with drugs. Everyone must redouble their efforts to address these issues and make sure that this is prevented from becoming an issue in our village.

We know crime prevention works. This simple fact is often forgotten in the ongoing debate over crime and its causes. Prevention works when individuals take common sense actions to protect themselves, their families, and their property. It works when these individuals reach out to strengthen communities. Crime prevention starts at home with some basics such as good home security, self protection skills and plans for children and adults, drug prevention, and neighborhood watch. The sense of security that comes from living in a home that provides physical safety, love, and support empowers children to explore, learn, and trust. In the home where adults settle their differences without violence and without abusive words or actions, they set a powerful example.

We must continue to build collaboration and partnerships. We must work to strengthen families, involve youth, and keep guns away from children. Remember, crime prevention is everyone's business. The best recipe for success is to involve and engage the energies of the community's key sectors: government, law enforcement, youth, elderly, businesses, faith communities, schools, social service agencies, civic groups, and others that can assist in the crime prevention effort. Make crime prevention a community priority.
