POLICE DEPARTMENT
Reduce Your Risk of Becoming a Victim of a Violent Crime
Make Your Home Safe and Secure
- Light is the number one deterrent of crime. Use of exterior lights on the home at night is essential.
- Install good locks on all doors and windows and be sure to use them.
- Do not hide keys in mailboxes and planters or under doormats. Instead, leave an extra set with a neighbor or friend.
- Ask for a photo ID from service or delivery people before letting them into your home. If you are the least bit skeptical, call the company to verify.
- Be sure your street address number is large, clear of obstruction, and well-lighted so emergency personnel can find your home quickly.
- Watch out for your neighbors and they will watch out for you.
Be Alert When Out and About
- Go out with friends and family, not alone, especially at night.
- Carry your purse close to your body, not dangling by the straps. Put your wallet in an inside coat or front pant pocket.
- Do not carry credit cards you don't need or large amounts of cash.
- Keep your car doors locked. Be particularly alert in parking lots, garages, and park near an entrance.
- Sit close to the driver or near the exit when riding a bus, train, or subway.
- If someone or something makes you uneasy, trust your instincts and leave the situation immediately.
