Boards, Committees, and Commissions
The Village Board creates independent commissions, boards, and committees to expedite business, assist the Board in making its policy decisions, and meet legal obligations. There are currently 5 active boards, commissions, and committees for the Village of Shorewood. These include the Village Board of Trustees, Planning & Zoning Commission, Citizen Advisory Committee, Police Pension Board, and Fire & Police Commission.
The Village Board of Trustees
The Board of Trustees for the Village of Shorewood is responsive to the needs and wishes of Shorewood residents and responsible for the following legislative functions: establishing policy, passing local ordinances, and developing a long-range vision for our Village’s future.
Citizen’s Advisory Committee
The Citizen’s Advisory Committee was formed to provide another means for residents to be directly involved in their village government. Members are appointed by the Village President (Mayor) and Board of Trustees. They serve without compensation. It reviews and makes recommendations on various village issues and is a forum for the exchange of information on these matters.
Planning & Zoning Commission
The Planning and Zoning Commission was established and created to perform all duties, functions, and responsibilities of a plan commission under division 12 section 11 of the Illinois Municipal Code and a zoning board of appeals under division 13 section 11 of the Illinois Municipal Code. The Planning and Zoning Commission acts solely in an advisory capacity to the Village Board with respect to all matters except consideration of those variances regarding fences and setbacks for single-family residential structures and structures accessory to existing lots of record.
Police Pension Board
The Police Pension Board manages the Police Pension Fund as prescribed under Chapter 5 Section 3 of the Statutes of the State of Illinois. Activities include awarding of pensions and investing funds until the need to make pension payments.
Fire & Police Commission
The Fire & Police Commission is established through an Act of the General Assembly entitled, Division 2.1 Board of Fire and Police Commissioners, of Chapter 65 of the Illinois Compiled Statutes.
