West 52 BBQ is a new, family-friendly barbeque restaurant in Shorewood located at 805 West Jefferson Street. Formerly Country Blaze in Channahon, owner Troy Johnson wanted the name change to signal exactly where the restaurant is and the type of food he serves—BBQ.
Over the years, Troy concluded that he did not choose barbeque, but barbeque chose him. He has been smoking meat for over 50 years and was first introduced to the method by his grandfather, who hosted barbeques for family, friends, and new company. Troy would later become a cook in the Marine Core for 6-years, where he would again experience the joy of cooking for large groups of people.
“Culinary ability brings people together; it is a conversation piece,” said Troy.
Now, after being a restaurant owner cooking for different communities like Morris and Channahon, Troy knows most of his customers on a first-name basis. Many of which continue to support him and his new Shorewood restaurant. When asked what the popular dish is at West 52 BBQ, Troy said he always encourages customers to discover their personal favorites. However, chicken nuggets and ribs remain popular amongst restaurant-goers.
"Try it before you buy it," said Troy. "I want you to determine what is best.”
West 52 BBQ is open Wednesday and Thursday from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. and Friday and Saturday from 11 a.m. to 2 a.m. There is modest seating consisting of booths, tables, and seating for children to dine in.
